报告摘要:

The aim of this research is to examine the intricate relationship between heritage conservation and everyday values of built heritage. The research draws empirical analysis from a traditional Malay village located in an urbanized area – Kampung Morten in Melaka. By investigating the practices and consequences of heritage management, initiated by the government and the community respectively, the results show there is a disjunction between the official interpretation of ‘Malay vernacular village’ and the people’s everyday sense of community and neighborhood identity. The research argues that built heritage management should not be understood from a deterministic conservation point of view, but rather to redefine the meanings of vernacular settlement from dynamic form of living experience and the local heritage values.
