China-ASEAN Forum: Current Trend in Indoor Positioning
The China-ASEAN Forum, a high-end lecture series, aims at fostering understanding and collaboration within the region with contributions from diplomats, experts and scholars around the globe. On June 20th, 2019, the Forum will invite Boonsit Yimwadsana from Mahidol University to deliver a speech on the current trend in indoor positioning.
Location-based services (LBS) has emerged as a key computing application service for various industries as computing application is moving closer to the real-world usage. In the last decade, location-based services has been fundamental to many successful companies, in particular logistics, retails and urban-service industry. In the heart of the LBS technology, Global Positioning System (GPS) allows anyone to find the location of any object with GPS receiver on Earth which can be used for various applications such as navigation, logistics, bus tracking, car hailing, museum guide, or even share bike are developed around the LBS technology. However, the same technique cannot be used effectively when an individual is inside a building. A large portion of GPS signals from satellites cannot penetrate through walls and buildings. In this talk, various popular indoor positioning technologies such as Bluetooth, Ultra-Wide Band and Wi-Fi will be introduced along with the challenges in practical usage of indoor positioning technologies.
